Using examples from literature, history, science, film, and/or your own experiences, write a response in which you develop your point of view as to whether identity is something people are born with or given or if identity is something people create for themselves.

Be sure to answer all parts of the question fully. Your comment/response to my prompt should be 300+ words. Your comment/response to a friend should be 50+ words. Your blog entries must be completed by 11:59 pm on October 21, 2012.

  1. Well for me to start off, Identity is your inner self it's what makes you on the outside for people to figure out and accept. Identity is something people are definitely born with because everyone has a personality just waiting to be developed and viewed. As a person my identity is about just having fun and being good to people. I'll make people laugh and I'll joke around with you but thats just who I am. I'm just trying to get to know you and who you are as a person. People always are assuming what people are by the way they look but really I don't pay attention to It I just try to pay attention to the person you are and what you like or dislike. When I meet some one new I try to see what they're like and I try to see what their intentions are as a person. If we have some similarities we could chill and just have fun from there, but if we don't than I'm not going to judge you thats your personality and your Identity. So if your some one completely different than me I'm not going to judge you I'll be fascinated and try to be your friend. People all around the world judge people but really I think thats dum why have enemies and cause trouble when your can make friends and have fun. All I'm trying to say is people will be better getting along trying to find someones identity. The world to me will be better much like this than it is now. Identity is you so take your Identity compare it with someone else's and than make friends with thats all.

    2. Chris I totally agree with you. I like how you said that everyone is born with a personality and it’s just waiting to be developed and viewed. I also like how you said you are not going to judge people just because they have different opinion about things. Good job!

    3. Chris, I think this entry was your best one yet. It was well thought out and you knew exactly what to say. This was perfect, just some little common mistakes that we all make. You did a great job though, keep it up! Lastly, I liked your thoughts about identity because I completely agree with your point of view.

  2. I think identity comes from when someone makes them selves act like some one that they are not. Also they create some thing that is not like them selves. Some people use identity to live by. They use this to rule their own life they some times have the cool identity and live by that. Identity is your inner self when you do something that is wrong you inner self comes out or your inner identity comes out. You can have an outer identity that is totally not like you at home or not. I had an experience with identity it was movie I saw the movie was called unstoppable the guy was a normal guy but when he wakes up one day he is not him self. He is a guy that has to save train. The train was going to blow up and he tried to save it. He does not save it he thinks he is dead but he wakes up in a place for scientists. He is part of an experiment that he has to save a train in the past. He has to go to the past and do it till he saves the train. it takes him so many times to save the train. when he is on the train his new identity he falls in love with a girl on the train. he gets so nervous when it is time for him to save the train his identity is making him not want to save the train. He does not save the train a lot of times. Then he finally gets to the train center wear the bomb is. He gets to the bomb and finally defuses the bomb. He gets his old identity and goes back to a normal life. It was the best movie I saw.

    1. Terrence, your essay is very good. I do feel the same way you do about identity. My inner identiy is always and will always be my outer identity also. In a movie I have watched "Fred Claus", there was also an identity change in it also.

    2. Terence I definitely agree with your writing. It was well thought out. But the movies name is not unstoppable. It’s called the source code. And I agree that he wants to find out who he is. That an identity is not something you’re born with. It’s something you can make for yourself and change.

    3. Terrance I agree with your opinion on what identity really is. I agree with all of the points you stated and more. Identity can’t be classified as someone you are not, it is about who you really are. I really enjoyed reading your writing, and I think you did a good job.

  3. I believe your identity is both given and developed over time. Alot of my identity was given to me by the way my parents are raising me. They taught me to always be nice, polite, and kind to others. I also keep it going and hope to pass it on every day. In the movie "Fred Claus" nwwborn comes into the family, Fred, who gets all the attention while his brother is steaming with dislike towards Fred. Eventually he turns nasty and dislikes his brother. He ends up destroying Fred's favorite tree which holds his birds' house and continues to break his toys. I think the brother created this identify. Both parents were loving and so was Fred. In the story "On the Sidewalk Bleeding", Andy was a gangster. He thought his identity was one of a gangster, tough guy. When he was stabbed and the only thing to do was spend time thinking, he ended up changing the identity which he created. Also in "The Interlopers", Ulrich and Georg were about to kill each other until a tree fell on them. When they were pinned and none of their men came to help, they changed their identity from trying to hurt each other to helping. Also, in "The Necklace", the lady who borrowed the necklace did not appreicate anything. Then she lost the necklace and had to borrow money and work very hard to pay it off. When she paid it off she finally realized what she had before wasn't all that bad.

  4. What I think an identity is what you make of it whatever you make for it. In the movie Twenty One Jump Street, Two police officers have to go under cover in a high school which means they have to change their identity to seem younger. They have to go through high school and try to find the supplier of a drug. They don’t know much about. They have to do everything they can to stop it from going to other schools. They failed at that but the point is they changed their identity fit in one did better than the other. But the identity makes everything change. The way you act the way you do things is different. The way you do everything but I also think identity is your name and where you’re from and what you look like. That’s why I disagree with this prompt because identification is your name and your face. That’s how people identify you. My identification gives you a reputation. Whether you want it or not so change it for the better when someone asks for it would be a card with my description age and name. So that would make this prompt somewhat inaccurate. Because identity is not only what is inside you it is what is on the outside. But the identity on the inside still makes a difference you can get a reputation for good or bad. This could change how people act around you. But on the outside you could have a weird name or something and get judged by your name. I think this blog is inaccurate and that I tried my best to answer it but hopefully next time you go into more detail and make an accurate blog next time so I can give a full answer.

  5. In my opinion, I believe that identity is something that you create for yourself. Although everyone is born with certain features from their parents, everyone is also different on the inside. I believe that I have certain features that I get from my parents on the outside. For example, my brown hair is from my mom as well as my brown eyes. Mt posture comes from my dad and so do my nose and my ears. However, on the inside I am extremely different from my family members. I think I am very funny, I am crazy, and I am smart. I think that Identity comes from your attitude. I think attitude is the way that you respond to things and the way that you act towards things. Your identity is what you make it and no one can change it. Over time, your identity changes. As you get older you may act more mature toward things and have more choices to make. By making more choices and acting more mature your identity gets stronger. When meeting new people and learning more about them they may not be who you thought they were. Everyone is different and you should not judge people by their looks or how they act. Unfortunately, there are some people in this world that make bad choices and end up paying the price for them. I also think that your identity represents your reputation. It tells who you are, what you like, how you act, and much more. For example, in the movie Titanic Rose and Jack fall in love and Jack ends up making a sacrifice for Rose. When the ship hits the ice burg Jack tries to get Rose to go on one of the life boats so that she doesn’t die. Rose decides that she doesn’t want to leave Jack and she jumps off the life boat as they were raising it down to the water and meets up with Jack. When the boat is almost sunk all the way Rose and Jack jump off of it and find something to float on so they won’t freeze to death. All that they end up finding was a door and it could only fit one person on it, so Jack lets Rose on it and he holds her hands and floats in the freezing cold water until they get more help. Unfortunately after a little while when Rose finally got more help, Jack sunk to the bottom of the ocean and froze to death. That showed me that Jack’s identity was very strong, caring and loving.

    1. I agree with you alot because in "titanic" it shows identity in so many ways and you explained it greatly. Also i see you said identity can get stronger. i agree with you so much on that because you can justg keeep on doing better and better things and your identity level will go up. Almost the same as touchdowns and football scores.

  6. Identity is some you earn in life almost as a lable but much different at the same time.Your actions cause identity. Your actions give you your identity because if you do great stuff you get a good identity and vise versa. For example a fire fighter has a great identity because he saves lifes for a living. They will put there life on the lind for somebody else.Thats shows there they have strong, brave, and caring identities. If you have a situation where you end up taking somebodys life you will recieve a bad identity. you choose your identity basically well you cause the actions that give you your identity. In the movie "the booke of eli" he is on a mission and tries his hardest to accomplish all opsticals that are getting in the way of him completeing the misson. Him and about 100 other people were on earth after an appocolypse. He was the only person with a bible but the he was blind so no body could read it unless if they knew braile. He had to get it to one part of earth to a guy that he could tell it all too and he defeated all of the oppsticals on the way to the guy but he eventually got there and accomplished his mission. This shows that his identity is very strong , has heart , unstoppable, will never give up, and that he is very brave. That is how I see identity in my eyes and that is how i think you get an identity.

    1. jake i agree compeltely with your responce. Identity is something you make up on your own by your actions and ect. I liked how you used the firefighter as an example to prove your point. Anyone in the world make up their identity from exactly what you said. Good job i really enjoyed reading this !!

  7. Identity is something you create for yourself. I think everyone eventually finds there identity by experimenting what type of people they hang out with and the groups they choose to be in. Life style is an example of someone’s identity. If someone chooses to live a healthy life style they belong to a group of people who exercise and eat right. If one chooses to live an unhealthy life style they belong to a group of people that eat out a lot and don’t exercise. The groups of people that do not exercise usually tend to be bigger and lazier. Finding ones identity might involve how someone does something.

  8. Like Thomas Merton once said, "A person does not simply 'receive' his or her identity. Identity is much more than the name or features one is born with. True identity is something people must create for themselves by making choices that are significant and that require a courageous commitment to in the face of challenges. Identity means having ideas and values that one lives by." In my point of view identity is something a human being are born with but yet, make up on their own. Once someone is born their parents choose their name, but once one is "grown enough" they tend to make their own identity. When you create your own identity you are basically making who you are in life and who you want to be known as. Your parents also make your identity they choose your name and where you live. I, myself tend to create my own identity, on the way I want to be known as or how I look at myself in life. I mainly think that identity is something a person creates themselves. Its beter to have an "identity," or who you are known as that you created because if someone else desides to creat your identity you would be following what they think you are and who they think you are. If they created your identity you wouldnt really have an identity of your own it would be the one that they created for you. Let me ask you this, would you want an identity that someone created for you or one that you created on your own? Identity is a big part of your life, it is big because your identity is who you are. If you ever get introuble in life they would know who you are by your identity. So identity is very big in life, make it yours.

  9. In my opinion, I think identity is something we all grow up to learn more about and something that we all dicover as life goes on. Eventually, in every one of our lives, we begin to come up with our own identity. A way we do this is by hanging out with the wrong crowd, that's one way you can acustomize to a negative identity. Another way you can acustomize to a negative identity is by being a bully or even being rude to someone. I think that everyone would want the positive idenitity, a way you can earn that is by hanging out with the right crowd. People that won't get you into trouble. I learned my lesson from that, I used to hang out with the wrong crowd and it got me no where. I always got grounded and I really learned from every mistake I made from being with those "friends." No friends would get you into trouble. So this year, my first year in high school, I decided to meet new people and hang out with new people. And of course, it's actually helping me have a stronger and more positive identity. I have way more true friends and I get along with more people than I expected. The people that used to not even like me, are now the people that I text almost everyday. This world would be better off if everyone made the right choices and had a good identity. Identity is definitely something that everybody builds off of, and that they learn through the course of their lifetime.

    1. Wow, that sounds like me. I kept saying that when I started highschool it was going to be a fresh start. I had some problems in middle school and I felt like I had a red X on my back. No matter what I did I could not make it go away. At one point I pretty much gave up. My parents were all over me to change but I felt it wasn't me that it was the people that had bad feelings for me. I did try harder and it worked a little bit but the people that were against me it just didn't matter. Starting fresh is what I needed. So far it is working. I am finally getting known for what I am not what people think I am.

  10. Identity is what you are known as, it’s who you are. Identity isn’t your name, it’s what you are. Everybody has an identity, whether it’s positive or negative. It’s still your identity. 10 years ago I received an identity. I was a little bored at home, so I wanted to do a sport. I chose football. I was playing football for Brick. It was a new thing for me, but over time I actually started to like what I was doing. After that I became known as a football player. Ever since that I have been playing football, and people still look at me as a football player, because it’s true. It’s who I am and that’s what I am known as. Another example would be say someone is very rude to people. He would be identified as a bully, or a kid with no manners. Identity is basically like your ego, it’s what you’re known as. A few months ago I began to skate. People didn’t think I’d pull through with it but I still am. Now people know me as a skater and a football player. Also I read a book about a kid who tried changing himself because he wasn’t happy the way he was. His ‘identity’ was a weirdo, but he didn’t want that. He changed himself and people began to think different about him, but that wasn’t who he really was. The reason I wrote about this book is to show that identity is who you are and what you are inside and out. It’s based off of your choices and decisions. Some people can be identified as happy and cheerful, as of others who can be identified as angry and depressed. Either way, identity is what you are, and what you are known as.

I got my internet back now, I checked to see if it posted, it wasn't there. I got it done Saturday, but my power was out all week so I couldn't re-post it until now. Please accept thanks.

  11. In my opinion identity is a thing that we all need to know it's really a essential thing for our lifes. Which one of us have our own identity. We need to look for the things we do, like choosing wrong people to hang out with. Another important this is Atitude,it doesnt work if you choose the right group to be with but you be the wrong person one it. Every person have their own way to think, act and ect, some think they can be mean or rude to others and just laugh about it, another ones act nice if the other ones do, some of them are mean but doesn't want to be treaded diferent. You need to make your own decisions and stop looking back. At this time we're mature enough to know who do we hang with, well not really, because sometimes we still make some wrong mistakes, Mistakes that can cause a lot of trouble for you even if it's just a really little thing, but all that depends who do you chose to be friends with, I learn my lesson , I already made a wrong friend and i didn't let the friendship go far, I choose the right thing so nothing bad happen, it kinda did but i figure before, but of course i got a lot of trouble first, It's all good now.The world would be much better if eveyone started making their own decisions and also chosing the right things to do, Identity is very big thing in life, And everyone need to make their own.

  12. Identity it is who you are and what you are. Your thoughts, personality, and actions all define who you are. In life you are born and when you are a baby everyone always says you look like someone. Like oh, look at his eyes he has his mother’s eyes and his ears they look like his fathers. People begin to define you before you even have a chance to define yourself. As time goes by you take on opinions, likes and the beliefs of your family. I feel your identity comes from what you do with what you are taught. You can act like your parents or your grandparents but then you are just becoming them. I feel that my identity has been defined by both me and my surroundings. I have taken what I have learned from my family and created me. As you grow and become an adult you become your own person. My mom always tells me that when she was young she was shy well she is far from shy now. So through her years she has grown and become her own person. She has defined herself. She once told me that she was being bullied when she was a kid by some boy. She was scared of him and felt that he was mean. One day she stood up to him and put him in her place. She said it was then that she realized she needed to be a strong person. She said as she has grown through here life in jobs she has always done her best but at times there where people that tried to put her down. She said she got stronger and better. Recently there was a newspaper write up about her and her boss called her a one of a kind and the one who always gets it done. See she created who she is, she made her own identity. I know I will learn from her but in the end I will be who I want to be.
