Topic 2: The Virtue of Honesty
Directions: In a comment, respond to the prompt below in 300+ typed words. Also be sure to respond to a classmate's comment so that we can keep our classroom conversation going.
In "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant, Mathilde Loisel goes to great lengths to over compensate for the fact that she misplaced her friend's necklace. Had Mathilde Loisel come clean and told Madame Forestier that she lost the necklace, she may not have spent most of her life in debt. However, she chooses to lie to Madame Forestier by omission and live in poverty in order to replace the missing necklace.
Do you think that honesty is the best policy? Explain why or why not and cite examples from your own experiences and observations. Have you ever had an experience when honesty has done more harm than good? If faced with the choice between being dishonest and potentially ruining a friendship or being dishonest and putting yourself in an undesirable situation, which would you choose? Explain your choice.

Honesty to me basicly means the truth to everthing you say. its not something you just get, you have to earn honesty. Its apart of your personality and some people just cant have that positive trait. Honesty can go a long way in your life, it can save your life. It comes from the heart, it will hurt you when your not honest, you will get that gut feeling when you know you're telling a lie.
ReplyDeleteWhen you are honest, it tells a person a lot about you without you explaining who you are to them. Just being truthful at that very moment, can change your life. For example, when you are in court before you go you speak, tehy make you swear on the bible to tell the truth and nothing but the truth. the court wants you to be comletely honest about everything. If you were with your friend and he shot somebody and killed them and both of you went to court about to have life sentence in prison. what are you going to do? What if you have a family, they're going to need you. So being honest about what happened that night with your friend, you have to tell the truth, because by you saying three words, "he did it", will save your life from prison. I understand its your friend or "your boy", but you have a family at home that absoultley need you. So make that right choice and being honest. As i once said before, honesty can save your life, so take advantage.
I have been dishonest in my life many times, and I am humble enough to admit I was disnonest before. Being dishonest can do a lot of damage. Being honest on the otherhand can repair damage. Everyone has told a lie before, you cannot help it sometime, but somtimes you just have to be completely honest. Me and my bestfriend were fighting because I was lying to her about something i will not mention, but it really hurt. I almost lost her until I went to her house and confessed in tears to her, I was completely sorry That I was not honest to her. Not being honest can make you lose your bestfriend, and I was not going to let that happen. To this day we are still bestfriends because I was honest.
Jeo I totally agree with you a hundred percent. This is a perfect example of honesty and a good essay. Keep up the good work, and you took the words right out of my mouth. Your first sentence is really good. Honesty is one of the best traits some one can have, great job.

DeleteI personally think honesty is the best policy but other people think different. If you lie and get caught it puts you in a bigger hole than you already are in. So there really isn’t a good reason to lie unless you’re extremely good at it. Being honest sometimes even gets you out of trouble or less trouble than you’re already in. Honesty got me out of a lot of trouble in school and at home. When I was about to get iss I told the truth and had my mom help me out and they didn’t give me anything so that was very useful. Also at home it helps me get closer with my mom and she has more trust in me and lets me do more things without asking a million questions.
ReplyDeleteThere have been some situations with being honest that put me in harm. Since I’m not scared to speak my mind it gets me in trouble a lot at school. Also with my friends sometimes when I say something I think is true they would get mad at me. I really don’t care because I’m telling the truth and I’m not like half of the kids in our school that lie.
I think I would have to chose being honest with my friend or family even if it ends the relationship or makes it worse. If they get mad at me for telling them the truth which is what they want to hear than that’s there fault. Also if they don’t understand than we weren’t meant to be friends or there not a true friend. If it is a family member then they would understand or get over it soon, because in the end were family. I strongly believe that everyone should tell the truth more often, it’s better for you and could get you out of a lot of good situations. Only lie if you really need it like if someone is telling you to do something you don’t want to then you should lie your way out of it.
i like all your points made here. I like how you dont care about what people think and you just say whats on your mind. You speak on what is true to you. Things dont revolve around them instead its you. People brown nose to much and i hate it. I think that people should start speaking their minds more

DeleteHonesty, to me it is definitely something you should always use. If you're ever in a case where you did something wrong like in “The Necklace” you shouldn't do what they do and just lie and try to anything sneaky. That is because lying just keeps putting you into more lies. If i was Mathilde i would have came out and said that i lost it. Mme is rich she could afford a new necklace. Mathilde was a sneaky rat who should have just came clean. I lie sometimes, but i lie on stupid things like who’s sock is that or who made this mess. If I were to lose something that I thought was expensive i would come out and say it. Sure I would be scared and I would probably have a nervous breakdown. My conscious would be eating me like it did to Mathilde. I would understand if Mme would have figured out a way to make me pay it off. Mathilde ruined her entire life. All because she was scared to face the fact that she would get in some trouble. Lying is the last resort. Scratch that never lie EVER. You only hurt yourself. You can lose all trust from a person if you were to lie. Just be honest and just face any consequence you have coming towards you . Even if it causes you to get detention or grounded. Or worse arrested or in jail at least if you tell the truth you will be known as the person who didn't lie and did the right thing. When I lie I have to tell somebody cause I always feel that something is eating me. I basically will crack. So in the end don’t lie. The truth will set you free. If you ever are caught in a lie just confess and you will probably get in even more trouble but at-least your free from all your guilt. Also always remember, the old saying Liar liar pants on fire.
ReplyDeletechase, i can totaly relate to this. I lie about silly thing like who's sock is that or who's mess. We both have the same idea in our writting.What you said at the end " the truth shall set you free" , if you didnt know that is a verse in the bible, and that one verse you put means so much to your essay. ReplyDeletehnesty is the key of life if your are completely honest you will have no prolems> if you are completely honest people will like you for who you are not who they think you are. i have had people lie to me many many times i completely hate it 100 percent. it bothers me more than anything else that someone cant be honest to me. same way with me i have lied to people too and i know i shouldnt have but i always confess because i get to guilty. i think honesty is again the most important thing to life. if every one was honest we would have barely any problems. if we did not lie or had to have secretes eveything would be much better because we could relate to other people on our personal feelings and other things. honesty would also help in school a lot to. if we told our teachers the truth on why we did our homework or if we are having trouble and why the teacher could fix that just like we could fix our mistakes. i just wish everyone could use honesty to the fullest. not just sometimes not never i wish people could use it all the time. this is my feelins one honesty.
I think that honesty is the best policy because you will not get anywhere telling a lie somehow in the end you will always get caught. Pulse if you tell the truth then you won’t need to worry about getting caught in the lies you told. In my personal experience I have told white lies before. But the one time I told a bigger lie I got caught. I was over my cousin’s house and I told my dad we were staying in but we really went out and played manhunt and got caught by the cops. If I was put in the situation of the character would have just politely told her possibly ruining the friendship. I would of done this because if she was mad and didn’t want to be friends then I would look like the better person because I manned up to the truth. But if she still wanted to be friends then I would look even better because I told the truth like a good friend would do. That’s the reason I would of chose that answer

So Im saying the truth is the best to do because youll be honest with yourself and others
