Topic 3: The Development of Identity
Directions: In a comment, respond to the prompt below in 300+ typed words. Also be sure to respond to a classmate's comment so that we can keep our classroom conversation going.
"A person does not simply 'receive' his or her identity. Identity is much more than the name or features one is born with. True identity is something people must create for themselves by making choices that are significant and that require a courageous commitment to in the face of challenges. Identity means having ideas and values that one lives by." -Thomas Merton, Contemplation in a World of Action
Using examples from literature, history, science, film, and/or your own experiences, write a response in which you develop your point of view as to whether identity is something people are born with or given or if identity is something people create for themselves.
Be sure to answer all parts of the question fully. Your comment/response to my prompt should be 300+ words. Your comment/response to a friend should be 50+ words. Your blog entries must be completed by 11:59 pm on October 21, 2012.

I believe that we were all given an identity before we were even born. I believe that god has everything planned out for us. He knows the path we are going down. And he knows when we take each breathe. I know that he is the one who gave me my identity. You don’t have to find it. You don’t have to think of one. You have one. Period. Your path is already chosen for you. It’s your choice to accept that or not. So I do not think that you have to find an identity or what ever that means. You already have one. You are who god made you out to be. So live life to the fullest. No need in wasting time with the “find your identity” thing or whatever. You have a road in front of you and just follow it and be on your way!
ReplyDeletegood job keep up the good work
DeleteYou have a very interesting view on identity.I think god has an effect on who we are to. Very good blog.
DeleteIm sorry but i have to disagree with you i feel that we make our own identity and we take our life into our own hand. but it was very good aaron i like that you put what ever you feel into it.
DeleteIdentity is something you are born with. Have you ever seen the movie Bourne altimania? It’s about someone who steals mark walhbergs identity. Your identity describes yourself and your life. It’s a very meaningful thing when you hear someone has had “identity theft” how is I Isaiah turner without my emotions attitude and how I act around others? It something once again called identity. People do not notice it but we as people use our identity everyday in school. When we eat lunch and type our codes in…well our name and account information is on the computer screen for the lunch ladies! This is something that follows you around all your life. Considering it also makes a reflection for you. In school when someone hears my name and their talking about football, I hope there saying i am good at it! I try and try my hardest every week on the field for the coach to see me. To see how I reflect as a person. To see who I am inside. Football, for me is not all about just catching and tackling. It’s about my attitude. A good example, every week on face book after our game I put a POSITIVE notice on how we did. Never negative. My identity consists on many things. Happiness, being funny, etc are all the things i am made of. It almost like chemistry… you are made different things that make you up as a person. Almost like, a combination of chemicals. For example C0’2 is a combination. That stands for me, hard working, funny, and encouraging! Do you, as my classmates know who I am as a person? What my identity is? I bet you don’t know all of them! In conclusion, identity is who YOU are. Its like glue. It sticks with you for all your life. You die with your identity.
ReplyDeleteHaha good choice. good response . i like it
DeleteI believe you develop your identity as you grow up. Identity is shaped around who you are friends with in life, who you hang out with. Also, the environment you grow up in and around. For example, let’s say a child grows up around in a well mannered, polite family and they have kind nice friends. It seems highly unlikely that that child will act out or get into trouble in life or at least not anything major. This rule however does not always work out or apply with everyone. That’s because an identity also is developed though the decisions or the path you take in life as well. The choices we make effect everything we do and experience throughout our lives. What happens to us with our social lives, real lives and our work lives. Identity is made up of our legacies, choices and our personality throughout our lives. We all make our own identity whether we realize it or not. Everything we do shapes our identity and who we truly are inside. Some identities can take a drastic turn in their lives. This is caused by a major event or incident in that person’s life. This can be anything from a death of someone in a family or a near death experience in their life. I think it’s truly fascinating how everything in our lives effects who we are inside. It all adds up inside and the end result is who you are truly. We all can choose who we are and who we want to be in life. We can change who we are but it is easier for some than others to change who they are. Some can change who they are just like that while others can’t ever change who they are. I truly believe you shouldn’t change who you are inside because that who you are.
ReplyDeletei 100% agree with you that people develope ther own identity. Good blog i enjoyed reading it.
DeleteA person’s identity is the name social security number and physical features a person has. This is very similar to a person’s personality. Personality is the sum total of the physical, mental, emotional, and social characteristics of an individual. A person has to make his own identity. Of course a person can’t control their most of their physical features, yet the way a person acts and puts them self out to be can change their identity. Many physical features can be changed to give you an identity. As you’re born you can have brown eyes and blonde hair. But as you grow you hair color can change to brunette. This is a change in a physical feature which is a part of your identity. Other changes as in mental or social can change your identity. If you’re not the brightest person and you work hard and get more intelligent you change your personality. Socially is easy to change from going from a quiet to talking more. Identity is in control of the person of whose identity it is. What the person decides to do with it is up to them. In literature you can see many identity changes throughout the story. These are dynamic characters. Many outside forces that can change for identity is the environment and habitat you live in. people with a more loving environment and habitat are usually more outgoing and happy. On the other side when someone has an unloving depressing environment and habitat the person tends to be more quiet short tempered and sad. Identity isn’t something you are born with but something you develop over time. By developing it over some the person has the will power to change his/her identity to how they would like their identity to be.
ReplyDeleteThis is really good Brandon, love your writing! Good job.
DeleteI think people earn their identity by the way they act. If you act like a total jerk to everyone. You will have a bad identity. But if you are nice to people then you will have a good identity. Your identity can change as you grow. If you are raised in a environment that is all about being polite most likely you will have a good identity. But things can change. People can act good in front of their family but they can be a rebel anywhere else. Only some people are like this and probably do it for attention. If your one of the people that hang out with all the rebellious kids people will most likely see you as a jerk. But if your someone that is always nice and helps in anyway you can people still might think you have a bad identity. They might say your just doing these things to suck up to people. But that's only dome people most people will think you have a good identity. and maybe if someone is raised by parents that dont pay attention to what their kids do and don't care what they do that kid could be the nicest person ever.
ReplyDeleteYour comment was very good. You had interesting opinions and you backed them up very well. Though my opinions were different from yours I really liked reading this comment. Your writing is very good and it seems like you took time and effort to make it. Keep up the good work.
DeleteI believe that identity is something that you are born with. It is who you are. For example it is your name or your birthday. Though you are not given your birthday before you were born they have an estimation date for you. So it is part of your identity. You are given your name before you are born. So that is a big part of your identity. Another thing is that you know people. They are given a name so you can know who they are. That is their identity. Without an identity people could not figure out who is who. Though you are given an identity before you are born you can change your identity. There are a numerous amount of reasons why you might change it. The reasons might be safety reasons. Anyway you can change your name or your social security number. You could change your address by moving. I think the thing people change about themselves most is moving to a different house. Your address is part of your identity. You might not have a choice and you may have to move. Sometimes people will not want to change it but there are reasons they might have to. Though some people change their identity I beleive that your original identity is your true identity. Somebody might have been born with the name Jessica. They might not have liked it so they changed it to Brianna or some other name. Even though they did that I think Jessica is their true identity. I do not want to change anything about my identity. I am very happy with the one that I have now. I think that all people should keep their identity. So in my opinion you do not chose your identity. You are born with it.
ReplyDeletePeople are not born with the traits and characteristics of who they are one point in life. You may be born with a certain hair or eye color, but personality traits come by the people you associate yourself with. If you hang out with the wrong people you could become the wrong person. However if you hang out with good, and kind people you’ll have a positive outcome. It is important to choose your friends wisely especially in high school there is many different characters here! I’ve seen people I use to be good friends with turn into something bad when that wasn’t who they were maybe a year ago. Make the right choices, and choose the right friends that will not pressure you into anything bad and make you a good person. The friends I have changed my life, they have turned me into who I am and I hope I have had impact on their life as well in a positive way. You could mistake someone for something they’re not, maybe by thinking they are your bestfriend or thinking they are a bad person. Don’t judge a book by it’s cover I like to get to know new people and find out what they are all about before I judge. Everyone does deserve a chance. Without the friends I have I don’t think I would be who I am today, I defiantly know who is and who isn’t my true friends since I have approached high school. During this year already I have met so many people, nice people, bad people ext. I have caught myself drifting into the wrong group of people but I always stable myself and stay with my true friends who have sculpted me into who I am and I don’t know what I’d do without them.
ReplyDeleteIdentity is something made by action not by reputation.Someone could be spoken about in such a bad manner that you feel that way about that person as well.I feel identity is made up in a path with obsticles in our way its made by one actions, reactions, and someones opinionon on a topic. so when i think about identity in a 21st century manner its made by someones "rep".For example bryon in that was then this is now was known to be the bad kid everyone always talked about. Also as the book went on he made a different name for himself. The once greeser boy, became an employed hard working man. so when life goes on everyone isnt going to be the same.next i completely disaree with the fact that some people think thats someones identity is made by one set rolemodel.so say if your role model jumped off a bride would you? so dont be known for something you not be known for someone you are. When your are who you are and not some act to impress those around you that defines an identity. So what you might not be the coolest kid in school, or not the smartest kid ever, but your still you.Why be someone your not? Be you. Now the next time you think your gonna make somethin of yourself dont do something way blown out of proportion to make yourself look "cool". So said by Pearl Baily "You cannot belong to anyone else, until you belong to yourself."
ReplyDeleteGood job with the work blaine. Keep up the good work
DeleteI think that we all develop our own identity. We didn’t pick our own identity, . I think we create it from the environment we come from. As you keep on growing up you keep on creating you identity with the choices that you make for yourself. Even thought you may not know that your creating your own identity but you really are because your always making choices and growing up. So there is no reason on why you should be always wondering who really is Roberto Pacheco. Am I a bad person , mean , good , nice person there’s no need for all this. I think that if a kid were to be coming from a nice , polite , clean family you would grow up to be the same. Because you were taught nothing else but having respect for your elders. But for a kid where he was raised from a family where you were taught nothing but being able to eat talk and have no respect for your elders that kid will most likely grow up like that because he wouldn’t know anything better. You always would want to be known as that nice kid who always has those nice matter , polite and always respects there elders. What you don’t want to be known as is being that kid who is always greedy , mean and has no respect for their elders. No one likes those type of people no one would like to be seen with a kid like that because then everyone else would think your just like him. One little mistake and you have the whole world talking bad about you. That’s why you should always make good decisions. Always making those good decisions you have a good reputation from everyone around you. As you can see identity is something that you create as you grow up.
ReplyDeleteYour identity isn't given to you. It's something that you make, discover and reveal. You make good times and you make bad. You have experiences that make you who you are. Not everyone likes you, not everyone ever will. You have to make you true colors individual and show them to the world, shake off that shade of grey and embrace the beauty of your inner self. Not one person in the world is a straight up bad or good person when they are born. When you are born you have experience up until now. Form your personality. When you were brought into this world, from your very beginning your parents have raised you in a certain way, that's why you believe in the same religion, politics, general things as your mom and dad. In the same way your parents might not raise you at all, they might let you do whatever you want get horrible grades in school and make terrible decisions. They make you grow up on your own and maybe you'll turn out in the ghettos of New York or you're as trashy as honey boo boo, but your still a person you still have that opportunity to change your future and make something out of yourself. People have done it before and people will do it again because its a part of their personality traits and their identity.
ReplyDeleteI believe that you are given some parts of your identity and you choose other parts, I will explain what I mean in this response. In my opinion you can be given or born with your physical identity for example you are born with your hair color your eye color even your height. These are all things that can not be chosen but are given to you. However I also believe that you are not born with the characteristics that make you, you. Such as your personality for example if you are funny or maybe sarcastic. Another reason for the way you are, I believe, depends on where you live and who your family is or who your friends are. Most of the time the people in one area, family or group of friends share a lot of the same traits when it comes to things like the things that people say or the way that they speak also things like jokes that are told. I also believe that just because you are born with a certain identity does not mean that you can not change certain parts of your identity. I believe that you have an inner you and an outer you. You can always make changes to the outer you. For instance people are always changing their hair color and eye color, their wardrobe and many other physical attributes they may have but I do not think you can change the inner you or who you are on the inside. I think you only have one true identity that can never be changed regardless of what you do or say or think, much like a super hero tough that may sound silly. You can not change who you are on the inside. That is my opinion on identity and how each person is different on the inside.
ReplyDeleteI believe each and every one of us makes our own identity. Some people may say that we our given our identity by god but I find that to be a sad excuse. If you know the bible it says god gave man free will. If you have it that way we live life by our choosing our own actions not anyone else that preset the entire human race. Now you can chose to look at it from the view of an atheist. Since an atheist has no belief in a higher being or anything of that sort they would MOST likely believe we make our own identity. Now the way I see it is since we make our own identity there is not set pattern for how we live our life. You could say each and every person is like a loose cannon, in that case anyone can do any one thing and have it change their own life by their own free will. Yes i know, it seems like im talking about fate in this to but i feel that these two intertwine together. The way I see it is that you can believe in one and not the other. My reason for thinking this is that fate is predetermined and there is the belief of you identity being predetermined. Then there is the fact your identity is who you are and how you act and make life decisions. thats how i fell on this whole situation.
