  1. “You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them,” by michael jordan, a professional basketball player, simply means that you have to hope for yourself before doing something. You need to believe in yourself, have faith, and think positive about yourself if you want to do something. having all of those can make you achieve that something you have or want. A time where I asked more of myself was the time my grandmother died. I was devastated. I couldn’t let her go even though she had already left us. In my mind I wasn’t ready for her to leave me. I always depended on her. she was the one who had always been there for me. She was the one who kept myself positive. she was the one who would keep my hopes and faith up. She was my everything and she still is. The time she passed away, I had to keep all of those things up all by myself. I had to show that I didn't need to depend on anyone. I had to find out what my strengths were, and I did. I found more things than I had expected. I am stronger than I thought I was. I asked myself so many things. I expected so many things from myself. Then it hit me. In order to fulfill this goal, I remember what my grandmother had told me. We were talking one day, her and I, and we had a conversation on how I had to be independent. I remember she had said to me, “Sweetie, no matter what, You will always succeed. I see a far way in you. The time I will be gone, you will not need me because I know you can go on by yourself. You will not need the need of anyone in your life to be happy. You CAN be happy ALL BY YOURSELF. I will always be with you either way. I will be watching you from up there and I will always protect you.” Ever since, I knew I could do anything and I didn't need to depend on anyone. I took all of my grandmothers steps, experiences and advices and I still am to go on to succeed. The results of everything has been great lately. I do succeed at most times and I am more independent now. Thanks to my grandma and all her words I can be a successful person.

    3. Great job Karla, I think the advice your grandmother gave you was very true and great and it also helped you to become a stronger person. Also, yes I do believe that before you do something you do have to believe in yourself and have faith. You also have to be brave if u want to try new things.

    5. This was really good karla. Good and detail and i agree. In order to succeed you have to believe. I can also relate to how you and your grandma were because me and mine were the same. Even though she was far away we kept in touch. The advice she gave you was good to :)

  2. ''you have to expect things of yourself before you can do them'' by Michael Jordan professional basketball player . this year i stared to play soccer in the central regional school team ,we were doing good even thought that we didn't have that much players , our record was 4 wins 1 loss we had played half of our season and the next game was going to be us vs. Donovan we had already played with them and we won 1-0,i am in the jv soccer team .the jv game was going to be right after school and the varsity game was going to be at night, it was an away game so we went to their field we were ready to win. when we got there was no one, so we started to warm up, when we finish the Donovan player got there, our coach told us to pass the ball around till they finish. our wanted to talk to us he said that most of their player were varsity players, he said that does not matter that we can win these game.
we started to play we were doing the best we could and it was an even half we started to play the second half and then they score it was a stupid goal, the player was offside but the referee didn't saw the player, we didn't gave up we keep fighting to score a goal, then we had a opportunity to score a goal. i had the ball i pass it to my friend then he was going to pass it back to me but a defender came running like crazy and tackle my friend but the guy didn't finish he made a step right where my friend's arm was, i saw his arm it was red. we didn't score after that but we knew that we were winners because we didn't cheat. we felt the field with our head up. and that how i know that you can expect things of yourself before you can do them.

  3. "You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them" by Michael Jordan is an inspirational quote. I totally believe this quote and I think many people should look up to it. A time where I had to expect more of myself was when I was at a swim meet. We were losing and there were only three events left and I had to swim one of them. When I got to the board to get ready I saw most of the people I was going up against were a lot stronger than me and they were a lot taller than me too. I knew that if I had gotten under third place, we would not have one. So I stepped back and only thought winning, because that’s what I thought I needed to do. We were getting ready to start until the referee said that two of the kids had jewelry on and that if they didn’t take it off they’d be disqualified. They refused to take them off because they were saying that it was a good luck charm so they were both disqualified. We got onto the block and swam and I pulled off second place. I was happy because I knew that they were trying to cheat, because the little things make a huge difference in swimming. I was only hoping for anything above second, and there are six people that swim each event, and 5 sometimes. When I heard the referee say step down, I knew someone had done something wrong. Then the two kids got disqualified, which meant I had to swim faster than 1 of my teammates or the other person from there team, and I did. That’s why I believe that Michael Jordan’s quote is an awesome and amazing quote.

  4. "You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them," quotes Michael Jordan, professional basketball player. I believe this to be very true. A person must have self confidence, faith, determination and belief In oneself to succeed in life. This year my ballet teacher has been expecting more from me because I am getting older and she wants me to move on to some more difficult steps. At times she will show me the craziest moves where for instance, I would have to spin 3 times then jump into the air. Hesitant and unsure of myself, I look at her like she has 2 heads. As if she's reading my mind, she says, "yes I believe you have that potential now all you have to do now is believe in yourself too." Next, I begin thinking that she is right. I will never know if I never have the courage to try something new. So, I close my eyes and imagine myself doing it first and then I "go for it" and leap into the spin. It wasn't perfect and I messed up a little bit but my teacher told me is was good. She explained to me that she wasn't expecting perfection the first time I tried something new and that the true meaning from the experience was that "I tried". Once I overcame the obstacles of fear and insecurity, practice will take the rest of the way, she explained. That night when I came home from dance class, I felt inspired and determined. Although it was already late at night and I had school the next day, I practiced that move until 1 In the morning. The very next day I mastered that step! I felt really proud of myself and I was so excited to show my teacher next week. I learned that if I just try and have belief in myself, I can accomplish anything. I realized that by expecting more of myself, I became motivated to get it right. Regrettably, I had the chance to apply to the Performing Arts Academy but I didn't even go to the audition because I was afraid to go to a new school, I was afraid of messing up and I just didn't think I was good enough. I didn't believe. Fortunately, I will have the opportunity again this year to audition and I know I will succeed because unlike last year in 8 th grade, this year I have belief in myself. My new formula for success is confidence, faith, determination, strength, belief and lots of hard work and practice!

  5. "You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them." was something Michael Jordan, a professional basketball player said. I think he meant that before getting to be successful there will be many obstacles and goals people have to pass. For him to get where he is today he probably had to set many goals for him and practice a lot. A time when I asked more of myself than I thought I could do was science class in seventh grade. Science to me wasn't that hard but at that time it was. I was failing that class. I did most of my homework but every quiz or test I would take, I would fail it. On top of that i would sometimes forget I had homework and end up taking a zero for it. When I saw my average I didn't think I would pass and my parents would probably kill me if I got a bad grade. At that point I knew I couldnt let my grades fall and that I had to do something because it could effect my future. After class one day I talked to the teacher and she permitted me to make up all the missing work. She also arranged a day where everyone of her classes could study but playing games with it. I attended and then on my own I would to. The thing that drove me to fulfill my goal was the thought of my future. I have the power to have a successful furture. If I work hard for it I will be successful. Many people that drop out of highschool say it was worth it but then again they work at McDonalds. I wouldn't want to live that life thats why I try my best and work as hard as I possibly can to succeed. Sometimes its ok to ask for help. The steps I took was working on my own and at school. Then in eight grade I would work the same and got good grades and it really paid off because now I am in A track science.

  6. Many people in there life have asked more of their self then they thought they could handle. In my life I have done it a few times. A time where I have done this is when I was asked to take care of my grandparents house and I told them I could do it. To realize when I was doing it, it was too much for me. As I was doing it I kept pushing myself to keep on pushing forward regardless of how hard it was. I didn't want to let me grandparents down so I tried my hardest to keep their house up and running fine. Even though it was hard I kept on trying until I fulfilled what I was supposed to do. It was a long week, but I kept on doing what I was supposed to. It turned out better than I thought when I realized that I had done it and I was proud that I could keep up with the issues. The house was relatively big so it was quite hard and considering they had a dog. This experience taught me a lot about responsibility. This was the first big thing that I had ever done for a week. Even the dog made it worse with it always leaving a mess around the house. This experience can compare to a quote once said by Michael Jordan. “You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them.” With this quote I believe it is very true in more ways than one depending on who is reading it since all people have different perspectives on how thing are and what they are done. This is what I done in my life that I asked more of myself than I thought I could handle, but worked out in the end for me in a positive way.

  7. "You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them." Was once said br michael jordan. To me that means that if you want to do something you have to be determined. You can't just enter an event and all of a sudden win. you have to practice or study or whatever it is that you are trying to do. To suceed in life you have to find out what your good at so you can expect yourself to succeed at it. If you want to do something you know you can't do your not going to be able to do it. For example, i entered an art contest in elementary school, i didn't really think my painting looked good and as it turned out i lost. So i didn't expect myself ot win so i didn't win. So i think that michael jordan was right when he said "You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them." Thats why i agree with his words

  8. “ You have to except things of yourself before you can do them” was a inspirational quote said by Michael Jordan. This is something everyone should think about when they are trying to accomplish something. Michael Jordan is trying to say that you have to believe in your self, have hope, and confidence before you try. A time this came up in my life was during our championship game in 2011. Our team was losing 3-2 and it was our last chance up to bat. My teammates ahead of me both had gotten base hits. I was hit by a pitch, right in the lower calf. I went down, my whole leg began to swell up and I had to sit the bench. This was not going well with me, I couldn't let my team down, I wasn't going to stop playing weather I was hurt or not. It was the last inning, last out and last strike. My friends got a base hit to tie the game. The score was 3-3. This lead the game into extra innings. The opposing team scored again, and we were losing 5-3. The coach still wasn't letting me play with my swollen leg,but I stood up to that. The bases were load, my team was up to bat. I was supposed to hit this inning. I told my coach, I was getting up to bat, weather I was hurt or not. I believed in myself that I was going to hit a home run and win this game for my team. All the hope, faith, and confidence I could find inside me, I used. When I limped up to the plate, the first two pitches were strikes. The next three were balls. It was a full count and the score was 5-3,bases were loaded. I expected myself to hit a home run. A miracle came true, the next pitch I took the ball to deep right field, it was a home run! That was the game winning hit as my team won the game 7-5. This all lead up to how I felt. I expected myself to be the game saver. I knew this wouldn't be possible if I didn't have the hope, faith and confidence inside me. I knew I could do, so I should the world I could as well.

    1. that was really good Matt. i enjoyed that you related this to your own life. i like how you believed in yourself even though you were hurt. you didn't give up even though the coach didn't want you to play the rest of the game.you didn't give up and you made your team win the championship game. i really enjoyed this story.

  9. Michael Jordan once said, "You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them." I think that quote means that before you do something that could be really hard, or something thay you don't have to much confidence in, you have to believe in yourself. You can achieve anything in life if you believe that you can do it and if you keep your mind to it! I can relate this quote to myself because in 6th grade I was playing rec ball at Moorage, and it was the championships. I was on the Yankees and the team we webt against was the Mets. This game i was pitching and in order to win the championships you have to win two out of the three games. It was the first game of the series, since I was pitching I was really scared. But I believed in myself I did pretty good that game to and I was really proud of myself. We won that game and eventually we won the world series. Those two days were so fun and I had a great time.As a result to believing in not only myself but believing in my team we won the world series. It was my last year on that team I felt so accomplished it was amazing! Michael Jordan's quote is a very inspirational quote because it makes people believe in their self. If Michael Jordan didn't ever believe in himself he wouldn't of made it to the NBA, or he would of never been that great of a basketball player. Also if he didn't believe himself he would of quit after his coach said he wasn't good enough to make it on the high school team but he tried and he made it to be one of the best players of all time. Also,

  11. “you have to expect things of yourself before you can do them”, this quote by Michael Jordan mean that you need to have courage or faith in yourself to accomplish anything you want to do. Back in seventh grade in my language arts class I never did my work and I failed almost every marking period. I feared failing and having to go to summer school , so I tried a little bit harder to bring my grades up. Slowly I brought it up. I thought that since I failed almost every other marking period that I was going to fail this class. The end of the year starts to come around and my overall grade was a 68. I thought for sure that I was going to fail. The last test of that marking period I passed with a 95 so that brought my grade up two points bringing me to a 70, making me pass that class for the year. Now If I didn’t have any faith in myself I probably would have failed that class. I believe that the fear of failing that class drove me to do better and to succeed. Ever since that year I have always tried to keep my grades up high so I never have to worry about failing. Hopefully all this work will pay off sometime.

“You have to expect things before you can do them.”-Michael Jordan. I have had a passion for surfing ever since I was little. I was always lucky to be able to try and do almost anything that I would choose to do. When I was about seven, I would try to surf but it was difficult because I didn’t have the strength to get out passed the waves when they were big enough to surf. I would try to duck dive, this is when you push your board under the on coming wave and come out the back of the wave. How ever I didn’t have enough weight to be successful and the waves would push me back into the beach. This was very frustrating to me. So I went on to body boarding and this was easy for me. I became really good at body boarding. I learned how to handle myself in the ocean. Of coarse when you body board your board is smaller than a surf board and u have fins on. You don’t stand up you lay down. However the thought of surfing still haunted me. I knew this was something I needed to do. Ever since I was little I made it my goal to be a surfer, it’s just something that gets into your blood, and living across the street from a famous surf spot “Casino Pier” makes it a no brainer. Now today I am fourteen, a few years ago I went back to surfing. I have accomplished my goal. I am able to get out when the current is strong. I've surfed after hurricane Irene, when the waves were huge, and battled many North Easters. I think I’m a pretty good surfer and I respect the ocean even more since the destruction of Hurricane Sandy caused. I still have a lot more to learn where surfing is concerned but I am confident it will now come to me much easier. I will continue on surfing.

    1. I liked how your story had a full plot. It went from Intro, Rising Action Climax, Falling Action, and Resolution. It was a very interesting thing to read. Maybe one day, you'll get so good at surfing you'll get sponsered if you don't already, and get credited for your talent.

  13. My personality is very unique. It took a lot for me to discover who I really was, or actually could be. I try to help as many people as I can. I'm a very good person when it comes to helping people. During the devestation of Hurricane Sandy, I was giving up as much time as I could to help victims with relief efforts. Being a victim myself, I had to get myself stable first. Throughout my small difficulties compared to others in the aftermath of this distructive hurricane, I gathered so many things to donate to shelter sites all over my county. And I'm still making efforts to help because they're are always people in need of some type of help. I worked for a donation service in Brick town because pf Hurricane Sandy. I did it for about a week and a half non stop. It drained so much of the energy I had. It was three days before I had to go back to school that I finished working for the donation service so I could get my life back to some type of routine. I slept for 15 hours straight! I was so exhausted. The hard work payed off though.I wish I could've done more work. I was too drained. My help was greatly appriciated I'm sure.I feed families, gave them clothes and supplies. And everytime I handed something over I had a great smile on my face, because I felt like their hero. It made me feel like a great person. Doing this changed what I may want to do in the future. I want to possibly do something that helps people in a way.

  14. “You have to expect things from yourself before you can do them.” This was said by Michael Jordan. I had to expect more from myself at my first cross-country meet. I was very nervous because I was new to running long distance. Also I didn’t get to train as much as everyone else because they started in the summer when I didn’t. So it was my first week on the team so I was very nervous. But I knew I had to do well or at least as best as I could. The thing that drove me to fulfill this was my team. I didn’t want to do badly in front of them. I know they weren’t expecting anything but I still wanted to show them I could me good too. So I stared to run on my own to get my body ready for the meet. I made sure to get plenty of rest so I wouldn’t be tired at the meet. I also watched what I ate so I wouldn’t slowdown from Burger King. I made sure to keep my grades up so I could run in the meet. When we got to the meet I was very excited. I couldn’t wait to show everybody that I was ready to run. Unfortunately I had to run 2 hours after we got there because there was other meets going on. The anticipation was palpable. I had butterflies in my stomach. I couldn’t wait. Then when my time came I was ready. I was running the 3 mile and a week ago I would have thought that it was impossible. But then the man fired his gun and we were off. By the first mile and a half I was very tired but I didn’t stop. I kept running even when my legs felt like they were on fire. When I finished I got a time of 24 minutes. This was not a bad time at all for someone who just started. And the best part is now my best time at the three mile is 22 minutes.

  15. Life is not an easy thing to make us who we are challenges are a natural part to shape who we are. But only we and we alone can make the choice to over come them and how. From small challenges to the biggest and the difficulty varies but each and every choice we make shapes us. In New York where I've spent the majority of my life I never really cared much for school from what we did to why we did it. And my grades suffered my mom was to nice and never pushed me hard ever until the full damage was seen. Barley or not passing was the situation in every one of my classes and I didn't care I had fun with my friends and did what I wanted during school. I never understood why I didn't but my mom had a long talk with me and basically told me my life is in my hands. I can make every decision to control where I end up. And some people live with there past decision and face the road ahead. But a true person and turn around and walk back the road and retry its terrible hard but because only the ones who truly care will do it. I didn't understand at the time but the more I looked the more I realized I wasn't trying because i was so far down a whole already that instead of climbing back up out i sat down and sunk in deeper. But I wasn't about to keep in that whole I climbed and did what I could. I went to school everyday tried and put my grades back up where they belonged. And I didn't do them for any other reason other than i wanted to and I am glad I did.

  16. Michael jordan is an amazing basketball player. If I wanted to do that it would take years and years of practice, and thats how he is so succesful in life. A goal I have is to be a construction worker. To do that I need tools, machines, and workers. I want to own a business Brians construction and landscaping. To achieve that goal i'll need a substantial amount of effort to do buliding's and clean up yards. I will also need tools andthat im getting slowly I now have a drill, hammer, sander, bits, and little stuff. Those are steps im taking to achieve my goal I really want to do that cause im great working with people and there is alot of money involved if you do the right thing. In school im going to do wood shop and metal shop to get experience with wood and metal so I know how to work with it. My step dad Rob makes paintings out of wood so he shows me little things here and there. My dad knows alot about that to he was a construction worker and painter. I bulit a deck with him the one day and he showed me how to cut the wood and safety along with it. One day I hope I get that dream and I think I over do it but theres risks involved and its better to start off early. So thats what im doing im taking it step my step and I hope for the best.

  17. “You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them.”-Michael Jordan professional basketball player. This means you have to believe what your are trying to do before you can succeed at what you are attempting. You need to believe and have faith in yourself and think positively about what it is you want to do. A person must have self confidence and determination to accomplish anything. I think he meant that before getting to be successful there will be many challenges that you have to do before being successful. When I was still playing soccer I was the best on my team. I was fast and I had a strong shot on goal. I was only the best at being the most well rounded player. Even though I am short I have a high jump that allows me to play well as a goalie and I had great endurance helping me being a mid-field player. I mostly played as a forward because I would be the only player to pass the ball consistently without fail. When the team was brought up to the next league we were in maps. It was a much harder challenge and that was when I woke up, this was when I realized I am not the best but I could be. I would always push myself to go harder and harder even though my team had a losing record. After all my hard work I found out every one else had been training as well and we won all of our last games because we all believed we could do it. This is what I have done to get to where I was before I quit. We were at the top of the league and I felt good about what I had accomplished.

“You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them.” Michael Jordan said that. As we know Michael Jordan is a very successful basketball player. He went though a lot of bad times but he did not let that stop him. He kept on going to fulfill his dream because he knew he could become a basketball player. I had the same problem with sports. When I was about ten years old I started to love baseball so I decided to become a baseball player. My first practice I went up to bat and missed every time. Everyone started to laugh at me. I was so embarrassed that I did not know what to do. So I just stood there and took it. Later that night I was so upset I told my mom I wanted to quit. My mom told me not to quit and keep on trying. She said you cant let one bad thing put you down. So I let that talk get to me. After that I started to practice with my dad at the park. He taught me so much I will never forget what he did for me. I came back next practice and I bombed the ball so far they were so surprised. I could see the expression on their face, I was so happy. At first I thought I could not play baseball but I thought to myself all I need is confidence. I hit a lot of inside the park homeruns that season. Then at the end of the season I got the MVP ball. I was so happy because I started from nothing and came up to be good. My dad was the best coach ever. I did not expect anything from myself at first but I gained confidence.

  19. "You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them." -Michael Jordan a professional basketball player. Hmm? A time when I asked more from myself than I thought I could do truthfully I’ve never really thought of that at least seriously. I have a habit of not doing things that take too much effort for such little gain. Although if I think about I guess I would want to have the powers to wield Innocence. Like the Exorcist do in D.gray-man, but I know that’s never going to happen. So to be more realistic I guess I want to get stronger; physically and mental. I’m not sure why but I hate being thought of as weak, but who does? I would think that everyone wants a source of power to not be vulnerable. It’s just like Inuyasha from “Inuyasha”. It takes place in feudal Japan where the world is full of demons and with all these strong demons there is a half demon named “Inuyasha”. He is half human and half demon and all his life he has been mocked for being half human, even his own older brother, who is a full-fledged demon, is resentful towards him and doesn’t even consider him family. So he seeks out for the Shikon jewel to turn himself into a full-fledged demon. It’s kind of like me but instead of seeking out for a jewel and killing stronger demons I try to get stronger by being the most active girl in gym, and I try to get mentally stronger by reading stories and learning from life experiences.
When I was little I always hated it when they said “I can’t hit her she’s a girl”. Even now they still do it, for example in gym it was freshmen vs. upper classmen in dodge ball. I would always stand at the front lines to protect the yoda so that he or she can use me as a shield so they don’t get hit. One of the upper classmen actually told me “If you don’t move I’m going to hit you, and I feel bad for hitting a girl”. That only made me want to stand there more, and I actually got so frustrated that I yelled out “I dare you”! In the end I tried to catch the ball, but that didn’t work very well since I can’t catch and I got out, but that felt so cool to stand up to them.
Mentally I think I’m good for now but physically I’m still working on. I’m trying to work out more but all the working out I’ve been doing is walking to the bus stop and relying on school gym. I’m pretty much the only girl in gym that actually runs on track day and afterword’s I even play basketball with the boys for the last ten minutes of the class. Next I should work on my diet but that isn’t really working either; I eat too much. Finally the end result I’ll have to figure out when I’m older because I don’t know yet.
