Period 8/9, Blog Due 1/13/13

Directions: In a comment, respond to the prompt below in 300+ typed words. Also be sure to respond to a classmate's comment so that we can keep our classroom conversation going.

This week, we analyzed three poems related to our current unit of study.  One of the poems we read and discussed was "The History Teacher" by Billy Collins.  In this poem, Collins suggests that by not teaching children the tough truths of our past, we risk cultivating a generation of people who will not be aware enough to lead us into the future.  It has been suggested by some cynics that ours is a "historically ignorant" generation, meaning that we are unaware of our history and our culture.  Do you agree or disagree with this sentiment?  Why or why not?  As an individual, what steps do you take to familiarize yourself with the circumstances of the world around you?  Finally, what issues or ideas do you believe all students should be aware of and knowledgeable about?  Use the RACE model to respond, and feel free to expand upon ideas we discussed in class while analyzing these poems.
Be sure to answer all parts of the question fully. Your comment/response to my prompt should be 300+ words. Your comment/response to a friend should be 50+ words. Your blog entries must be completed by 11:59 pm on January 13, 2013.

  1. Some people think tell young kids the truth about the real world some people think it's good to tell kids the truth and some don't. I don't think it's right to tell the young kids the truth about the real because it will mess with there heads and here is why I think is not right to tell a kid about the real world. I think it's OK to tell kids some thing to a extent. Like it's OK to tell kids about nine eleven and what happened but if we tell them the whole story like how they stole airplanes with people on it and crashed it into build then kid might never want to fly on and airplane, and what started this whole thing kids might take a different look at the world and think it's not a safe place to live. Just stuff like that can hurt kids. And I think having your teacher telling you the cold hard truth and be very painful for a young kid mind. Now if we say we are one of the most safest country in the world and we have a very strong military to protect us in case of any want to come and hurt us that will put the child ind a better state on mine that it is safe to live here. This is why I think it's not right to tell kid the cold hard truth about the world be over time when they get older we can go more in depth on what really happened.

  2. In my opinion I think telling the kids about what has happened in the past shouldn’t be done. Why I say this is because the kids will grow up to be scared, and would not want to grow up they will fear to grow up. You shouldn’t go into full details of what has happened for example 9/11. You shouldn’t tell them the story in full detail as they could be feared about it. They could grow up being scared to going on planes. They will obviously learn more about the event but at a age where they should be able to handle the truth. Instead what a young child with a young mind should get told about is our military, that we have a strong, safe military. So if anything bad were to happen to our country they should know that they will be safe due to our strong military that we have. Having to go detailed on a certain event the young child could look at the world as a not safe one, one that is very dangerous and doesn’t want to live in. We don’t want any of the young children to be thinking that instead to be knowing that they will grow into a safe, fun world. It isn’t so necessary to know so much detailed about the worlds history as you wont understand as much at a young age. The kids will learn more detailed about the worlds history at a much older age where every kid will be able to know about it without having it to bother them as much as it would at a young age. This is why I think children at a young age shouldn’t learn about the worlds history at a young age. As it would get them to think about our world in a bad way, rather than a good one.

    1. You make a good point and used a very good example with 9/11 and think its interesting you feel this way. You have given me a new look on this idea. Overall, a very good essay.

    2. Roberto, I don't really agree with you. I do think telling kids about the past should be done and not even just with the past, with current events to. as I said in my response it should be sugar coated to spare their innocence or make it so they're not want to grow up. you don't have to make them scared of planes just tell them the basics and spare the details

  3. Some suggest our generation is historically ignorant and we are unaware of our history whether it is current or past. I personally do not agree with this statement at all. I specifically disagree with this statement because I myself as well as others I know including my friends know about the past and know the basics of today’s current news. Personally, I stay up to date on the current news by watching the occasional news or reading the paper on my iPod. As for staying in touch with the past, I like to read up on past history. However, not everyone I know reads or even likes history I however love history. So I guess you could say it really depends on the person.

I think whether or not a person likes history we should all know about our past. Like important historical events like the signing of the declaration of independence. Now I do not believe we should hold back any information when learning about the past. After all you are only going to prolong the inevitable. At some point we all learn about war and death and that’s apart of life. If you hold back on that information you’re not shielding us from anything at a young age in all reality you’re only going to make it worse in the future. I mean if you teach a young child that there was never any war between countries they can believe the world is perfect and not violent. In all honesty, don’t we need war and violence to learn from those mistakes? Without war everything would be the same and no one would have a say in anything because in a way war is a way of having a disagreement about something. Without disagreeing we can never change anything.

  4. In my opinion I do think kids should be told things from our past and our history. For the reasoning , if we do not inform them they have no way of seeing and knowing the evil in our world. They will think the world is all good and when comes a time they’re not familiar with they will not have any idea of how to handle it. They need to know to be taught what to do in certain situations. We’re taught to not talk to strangers, but why not if they keep the world looking perfect. We will feel no reason to stay away from someone known as a stranger to us because we were grown up to know everything is peaceful in our world, when it is the complete opposite. Age groups of all need to know the truth of some extent. We’re grown up watching fairytales, for example beauty and the beast, little mermaid, Cinderella and much more. Notice how they all have happy endings, like nothing never actually has a bad ending they teach the kids the world is 100 percent safe. Relating to our classes we’re learning about the holocaust which is a perfect example of how some people are evil, sick and bitter towards one another with a reason or no reason. For me to recognize the things that occur in our every day world I will come down stairs in the morning before school and the news will be on, or my dad will read the news paper at work and tell me about it. Or, we may even hear about it from our friends, peers and teachers. There is so many ways to fill yourself in on what is going on around us. So yes, kids should be told the good and the bad in the world no matter how unbarring it seems to be.

  5. In the history teacher by Billy Collins he writes that it's better to not tell young children the truth because it will ruin there childhood. I don't believe this is true by not telling children the truth it will only make everything seem better than it really is and it will make kids think life is easier than they expect. I'm my opinion our generation is "historically ignorant". Kids are to worried about what everyone else is doing and what's happening on Instagram or twitter to care about doing there work. They think oh my friends aren't doing the work why should I? To familiarize myself with the world around me I make sure I pay attention in class and do all of my work and if it comes to learning on my own I try to do as much as I can. I feel like students should only learn about the important things. Like history and math. Other things like poems and such should only be taught if everyone wants to learn about it.

  6. With the generation of today I do not agree or disagree that we are historically or culturally ignorant. This is because there are people who love to know what is going on in the world. While others do not care for what is going on in the world or what happened in the past. With these types of people I think that they are more about the future. By this I mean they are always using technology and forgetting about the old thing. Like an example we used in class was the analog clock. The way that people who are historically ignorant may say they don’t need it because there is a digital clock. But while there are people like this there are very few who love the past, present, and future. These people would use the analog clock instead of being ignorant and saying they don’t need it cause of the digital. To familiarize myself with the world around me is that sometimes I watch the news. This is so I can see something’s that go on in our world. Me in this day in age I wouldn’t say I’m either ignorant or non-ignorant. This is because I’m not all about the past present and future but I do stay with it and look it up. The day and age we live in to me is neither historically or culturally ignorant or not

  7. I do not really know where I stand with this subject because it is a very touchy subject. I believe that kids should be aware of the world around them but only to a certain extent. Especially depending on their age. I think that as a kid gets older he should know certain dangers and things to worry about in the world, but not too many. You do not want to overwhelm a kid. Although I do believe it is important to tell them some things. I do not think you should tell them everything, it could worry them and potentially create problems with their social life. I also believe that not telling them those things will not ruin the future in any way shape or form. Only that it would help if you did. I think age is a big factor in this subject also. In my opinion your child should be a certain age and be mature enough to handle some things you might tell them. If a child is to young he or she may just get confused, or maybe not even understand you. It is the same thing if your child is not mature enough. In that case it is not even worth telling them. It is hoop to three parents to decide whether our not three child is police enough or mature enough. The parent has too choose the time that the child is ready to hear those things. I believe it is best to tell your child in moderation. That is how I feel about telling your children about the dangers of our past.

  8. Some cynics believe our generation is a historically ignorant generation, that we are unaware of our history and culture. I agree with half of that. I don't think we as a generation are historically ignorant we learn about our history everyday in school, and either from adults of friends in our lives we hear them talking about events that took place in our past. But, I do think we lack some of our culture. I can't say that about everyone but some people, yes. some steps I take as an individual to make myself aware of the world around me are watching the the news, paying attention in class and listening to other people talk. The issues or ideas I believe all students should be aware of depends on their age and grade level, like the school shooting that just happened, obviously as high schoolers we are going to talk about it in class but I don't thing they're gonna tell kindergarteners. and if they do tell the younger kids they sugar coat it. we want people of all ages to be aware but we spare the innocence of the younger kids. we want to teach younger kids about the dangers in the world and how to be safe around strangers but we don't want to shock the little kids so bad they never want to leave the parents side. and we don't want them younger people to think they can just walk up to a stranger on the street. we want to educate the people to stop some history from repeating itself, like some of the terroristic acts against America. we want to learn about how and why they happen to either learn how to stop it or resolve these problems. so I think everyone to a point needs to be educ

  9. I disagree with this because its your life you have the option to educate yourself and others the information is out there it just depends in how you utilize it. It has nothing to do with other people on how you do this and no one can tell you that you can't. You can't say that this is a wasted generation when we have our own lives and can make them how you want them. When people are being historically ignorant that's there problem it has nothing to do with anyone else. You can't say "ok this whole country has to go to this many hours of history classes" that's controlling. This is a free country and that's the beauty of it you can make all your own decisions. Don't ever forget that. What if you graduated high school and you're going off to have a job that has nothing to do with the history of America? My dad is a very intelligent man. He say "if you don't learn the history, it will repeat itself. " this is a true statement but if it's your choice not to learn it then don't. No one can tell you what to do. So, yes I do agree in some degree but mostly I disagree.

  10. In my opinion younger kids should be told the truth about the past. Kids should be able to realize that this world that we live in is a craphole. You have to teach them to never talk to strangers. We had a bad tragedy that happened a couple years ago. 9/11 was very tragic and people will never forget that day. Well when I was in school that day I didn’t know what was going on. I wasn’t smart enough to think that our towers were hot by two planes. I barely knew what the towers were. But as I got older I was taught what happened. All my teachers talk about it on that day and if younger kids didn’t know about it they would think the world is perfect. Kids should be taught our past. Actually I learned the other day that there were actually two terrorist attacks on the towers. There were bombs planted in the basement. I never knew about that till the other day. I think that’s pathetic because what if I was asked what happened on the date of the bombing in the basement of the towers. I wouldn’t even been able to answer it because I was never taught it. If I was a teacher I would teach my students about a lot of tragedies that happened in American history. Not just what happened on one day even though that one day changed a majority of people’s perspective of our world. Kids will be historically intelligent one day because in my time kids just don’t care about anything. They just care about their technology and friends.

  11. I personally agree that our generation is historically ignorant for a few reasons. First of all i feel that most people want to live in the now instead of the then, which i understand. Not all of history that we are taught is interesting, like i personally enjoyed learning about the revolutionary war but found the learning about the inuits and olmecs were quite boring. So when it comes down to it do you really wanna learn more about history then talk to your friends or play on there phones. Now im not saying every person in my generation is like this, but i know more people who could care less about history. Another reason that kinda ties in with what i just said was that none of this interesting in their eyes. Maybe all they care about is there next phone or what they are doing after school. I myself like to say i know a bit about history and our current news. I on occasion watch the news when i am at my dads house and i see a few things. On the other hand at my moms house i will watch some people on youtube talk about whats they see special going on in the world today. Finally i think everybody should know about national or global tragedies. Now that can be a lot but the few that come to mind for me i see fit know. 9/11 was something our generation should know about since many good people died that day. I also have the holocaust come to mind, although most people know a good bit about that. I also have something recent that comes to mind, the sandy hook shooting. When stuff like this happens people are crazy about it and see it for what it is, a tragedy. Most people by now have most likely forgotten about it or just threw that memory into the back of their head.
