This week, we analyzed three poems related to our current unit of study. One of the poems we read and discussed was "The History Teacher" by Billy Collins. In this poem, Collins suggests that by not teaching children the tough truths of our past, we risk cultivating a generation of people who will not be aware enough to lead us into the future. It has been suggested by some cynics that ours is a "historically ignorant" generation, meaning that we are unaware of our history and our culture. Do you agree or disagree with this sentiment? Why or why not? As an individual, what steps do you take to familiarize yourself with the circumstances of the world around you? Finally, what issues or ideas do you believe all students should be aware of and knowledgeable about? Use the RACE model to respond, and feel free to expand upon ideas we discussed in class while analyzing these poems.

this week when we analyzed three peoms we discussed the poem history teacher. Collins suggest that not teaching the children the truth of our past , we risk cirtivating a generation or people who will not be aware enough to lead us into the future. i completely believe that we should tell the kids the truth. i believe that if we dont tell them the truth history will repeat itself. i completley belive in this theory.i do not agree that this generation is history ignorant. we learn in history every day what the past is like and how cruel some of these older cultures where. teachers tell us the truth about the holocaust, not to torment us but to teach us the right thing to do and the wrong thing to do. teachers teach us these things but it is within the students to take in that iformation and use it everyday. some kids learn about the holocaust they say how horrible it is then right after they go out in the hallway and make fun of kids because of there jacket or their pants. that is doing the same thing as the germans did to the jews. i think that is why teachers should tell the truth and not lie to the students.
ReplyDeleteThis week we analyzed poems during class, we went over the poem “The History Teacher” by Bill Collins. In this poem, Collins suggests that by not teaching children the tough truths of our past, we risk cultivating a generation of people who will not be aware enough to lead us into the future. I agree with this completely. Although the only problem I have about this is I believe after a certain age children should be told about the past. I feel that kids at a young age shouldn’t be told this for two reasons. One because they are too young to even understand what we are talking to them about, and secondly because if we tell children at a young age the tough truth about history they may be scared to go on in life. Kids over the age of 8 or 9 should be told the truth about our history. I also believe that we should tell children about our past history so that they learn from it and can change the problems in their generation. If we did not say anything to them about our history then we have a good chance of history repeating over and over again. As an individual the steps I take to familiarize myself with the circumstances of the world around me are; keep my eyes open to my surroundings, ask about things that have happen in the past, pay attention to what we learn every day in history and watch what is going on, on TV. All these things are ways for me to see and learn about what happen in the past. With that being said I think teachers, parents, guardian should talk to the children about the past. They should even talk to kids about what is going on right now. Children should be familiarized with the things that are going on right now during their time and also about things that happen before them. By doing this they will learn from our mistakes that were made in the past and fix them.
ReplyDeleteLex i understand your blog completely. We need to start teaching kids in school the true history. I also like how u said that history repeats it's self. Sooner or later something bad will happen. Either way your blog was pretty good and i liked it.
DeleteI also agree with everything you said. Nothing good comes from hiding things.I also agree that if kids are too young then we need to wait to tell them about certain facts.
DeleteThis week we discussed "The History Teacher" by Billy Collins. In his poem his poem he wrote about how people should not teach the real history to children. Instead he rather soften it for them and lie to them all so they are not worried nor aware of what has happened in our past. Billy Collins thinks that our generation should be “historically ignorant”. I for one think opposite. We should not baby children once they come to a certain age. Lying only leads to more lies. Sooner or later they will learn what the truth really is. They will become angry and upset and possibly lose your trust. Also why lie to them? History is one of my favorite subjects it truly is amazing to learn about what has created today. Our past is so important I don't even know where to start. If we never studied history or we just didn't care we would lose it. We would forget about all of our past lives. Life would be boring. I know some people who are reading might hate history and think it’s boring but trust me it isn't. They say history repeats itself and i believe that 100%. People now are crazy, they possibly will do something as stupid or crazy as what Hitler or Osama Bin Laden did. All i'm saying is children should not be told alternate facts about history They should be taught to learn from the past and change the future. Like all adults say the children are the future. I’m pretty sure they do. So after what I have said I’m sure that they will still hopefully teach younger children the real history and not some stupid cover up. I can understand Billy Collins but he is still wrong. I should teach him a thing or two.
ReplyDeleteChase, I really enjoyed your essay. It was really well written. Although you were on a different side of the argument than me, you still had stong reasons and examples of why people should not be historically ignorant. I think people should be historically ignorant because they should know about our history, but you have a different opinion and that’s okay.

It has been suggested by some cynics that ours is a "historically ignorant" generation, meaning that we are unaware of our history and our culture. I agree with this sentiment because of many reasons. First of all, I think adults and children should know their past. It is their history and their world from many years ago. They should know what went on many years ago because so many things and events has happened here on our world. We live here and we should know what events and things occurred here. As an individual, the steps I take to familiarize myself with the circumstances of the world around me is to pay attention in history class. I always focus in history class because I learn about our history and things from back then. Now I know our history. Also, I watch television and learn about our culture and more from the time before us. Finally, the issues or ideas that I believe that all students should be aware of and knowledgeable about is our worlds history. They should know our worlds history for good intelligence on it. It is important that students understand how life was in the old days. If they did not know our worlds history they would have no idea what anything was like back then. Also, with their knowledge of our worlds history they can share with others so they can know about our history too.

It has been suggested by some cynics that ours is a "historically ignorant" generation. i do not agree with this because if this was true then we would not be learning about the halocaust and all the other things related to that. but its ot only bad stuff we learn about we also learn about the good things that happened in the past also. and if it realy was true that we were "historically ignorant" , no one would even bother teaching us about all the things that we have learned. but teachuers arent the only ones who teach us of these things our parents grandparents or even other random people to . if they didnt care about our history then they wouldnt go through sutch effort to explain it all two us. as an indivisual i just let myself get informed of our nations past by learning about it in school or in a book. but there definatly are some things from the past that i belive every student should 100% be tought about, things like the holocaust and also things like racisim. those bad things are the most important to be tought about because it will inform the student of how wrong all of that was and if we arent informed of it then there is a chance the same mistake can be made again and no one would want that two happen. but all student should also be taught of the good things that we have acomplished so they do not think that everything that has happened is bad they need to also know the good things that people have done so they will have a higher expectation for themselve.
ReplyDeleteyou spelled hollocaust wrong, sweetheart :p
Deletethis week when we analyzed three peoms we discussed the poem history teacher. Collins suggest that not teaching the children the truth of our past , we risk cirtivating a generation or people who will not be aware enough to lead us into the future. Cynics have stated that our generation is historically ignorant. Unfortunatly we are nowhere near that point yet. We do have our moments as a society that make us out to look like the face of ignorance, but the truth is, that as of right now, we are still very well informed of our past. As time goes by, more and more of the holocaust survivors are dyeing everyday, unfortunatly, there are people in the world who refuse to believe it ever happened. So with this said, even if its just a breif lesson in WWII, its still a step ahead of not knowing at all. As time goes on, i do believe less and less information will be given to future generations. Soon, the topics will probably never be brought up again, but we're not exactly there yet.
ReplyDeleteA couple weeks ago we read three peom. One of the poems was by billy collins tittled the history teacher. In this poem the author says that by not teaching children our past we risk "hurting" a generation of people who will not know enough about the past to lead us into the future. I agree with his statement one-hundread percent. If the kids now dont learn about our history how will they go through the future. The steps i have taken growing up is acctually learning history. I love history. Its my favorite subject out of all of the school subjects. I believe kids should know everything from when theyre country started including all the wars they have been involved in all the way up to terroist attacks up to today. Inconclusion i believe kids need to learn about history in there country.
