Period 3, Blog Due 1/13/13

Directions: In a comment, respond to the prompt below in 300+ typed words. Also be sure to respond to a classmate's comment so that we can keep our classroom conversation going.

This week, we analyzed three poems related to our current unit of study.  One of the poems we read and discussed was "The History Teacher" by Billy Collins.  In this poem, Collins suggests that by not teaching children the tough truths of our past, we risk cultivating a generation of people who will not be aware enough to lead us into the future.  It has been suggested by some cynics that ours is a "historically ignorant" generation, meaning that we are unaware of our history and our culture.  Do you agree or disagree with this sentiment?  Why or why not?  As an individual, what steps do you take to familiarize yourself with the circumstances of the world around you?  Finally, what issues or ideas do you believe all students should be aware of and knowledgeable about?  Use the RACE model to respond, and feel free to expand upon ideas we discussed in class while analyzing these poems.
Be sure to answer all parts of the question fully. Your comment/response to my prompt should be 300+ words. Your comment/response to a friend should be 50+ words. Your blog entries must be completed by 11:59 pm on January 13, 2013.

  1. I believe that it is not right to sugar coat our past. In school we rarely learn about the bad things that our country has done. In Germany I know that they do teach there students about the concentration camps and the Nazi’s. They do this because they know that it was wrong and they don’t blame themselves. I think our classes should be more like the ones in Germany when we learn about our countries own wrongdoings. We should learn everything about our past not only the stuff that we did because of other countries. We have done plenty of things that are not taught in school that people should know and some would want to learn because they are curious. If what we did is not taught the next generation would not know and then the next, and the next. Eventually those things will happen again because they weren’t taught about how bad they were and didn’t know that it had originally happened. If they were taught they would know how bad it is and most likely would not do it. I strongly believe that the students should learn everything there is to know about there own country and nothing should be sugar coated. None of our past should be down-graded and lost in time because of teachers wanting to protect the innocence of the children that was already clearly lost. We would want to learn about things that have happened in wars and more about culture of the places that aren’t here anymore. If it is not taught to the students how are they supposed to know what has happened in our countries past and look forward to a brighter and better future? I think no student should be deprived of the right to learn about his/her country.

    1. I like what you have here, great job explaining the poem your examples are really good specially the one about the German classes. and I do believe that no student should be deprived of the right to learn about his or her country I really enjoy your writing, and you explain all the parts

    2. This was really good. I agree that people should sugar coat things because then we become ignorant of our past. Good job explaining on how the poem was to you. I also agree that we should also learn about the things out country has done wrong. Anyway thins was good.

    3. I really liked the way you worded what you said. It was very clear to read, and understandable. I liked what you said " I strongly believe that the students should learn everything there is to know about their own country and nothing should be sugar coated " I myself believe that too. We should spend more time studying how things were in the past, some really don't make big mistakes.

    4. I really like your response to the blog. You worded it great! You explained everything very well! You had good examples. It was very well explained and worded clearly. I like how you said that students need to know the things that go on in our own country and that nothing should be sugar coated. I agree with that. Students need to know what goes on around us so we won't make the same mistakes. Although, we are too ignorant and blind to see the same mistakes happen over and over again. Keep going on with your writing! I hope to read more from you.

  2. I like your opening and you did a very good job explaning this poem. The german classes was a great example I agree I think our classes should be more like those. I really enjoyed your writing I hope to see more of your great details in the future. Very good job anthony.

  3. In our world there is a bunch of lies and it seems we just cant help it. But in school we shouldnt were there to learn about good and bad I know our country isn't the best but yet we still lie. Our history teachers can lie or streght the truth. We don't know the past the only really way to know is if you were there. Scientists are just guessing. We aren't perfect we do bad stuff all the time for example the civil war. We killed our own people not only some but thousands. If you think about that its messed up and silly. Like I said about you dont know unless your there how do we know the color blue is blue or if a fish is really a fish. We don't know we say that cause someone told us. I really liked that poem and I could write to it in many ways. I enjoyed writing about it cause I could relate to it.

    2. Brian your writing was outstanding. I liked how you used great examples from the civil war . You also used the proper response to answer a question or open-ended. The way you used the R.A.C.E method was what made your writing a success. Good Job.

  4. "The History Teacher" by Billy Collins. this poem is about not teaching children the tough truths of our past, i disagree with this sentiment because I believe that is not right to sugar coat because then the kids would not learned the what happen in the past and if what they are taught is always sugar coat then all the bad stuff would happen again, one example is the holocaust if the teacher does not teach the holocaust the way that it happen and he explain it other way so the student don't think that it was that bad, then future generation would think that it's a joke and they would probably make it happen again and they would think that it's ok to do that. if thing are not taught then the next generation would not know and then the next and the next and it will keep going. as an individual the steps that i take to familiarize myself with circumstances of the world around me are i ask my teacher about how it happen and all about it my teachers tell me the truth and i like that because i will know how bad or how good it was and that will help me because when something happens and its similar to something that my teacher had told me that it has happen in the past i will know what to spec of the situation the issues or ideas that all students should be aware of and knowledgeable are anything that it has happen in our country, like the civil war or anything knowing the real truth history is better than sugar coating. if the real history is not taught to the students how are we supposed to know all of this things that had happen in our country's past.

  5. When it comes to younger generations honesty is a touchy subject. But the part that draws around the real consern is when they learn it how and from whom. I believe people can handle the truth and a lie or babied version will create some type of distance. From the truth but when the truth is learned hatred and recentment could grow. Sure the truth is sometimes bad or hard to accept but we need to be able to trust ourselves and others. I disagree with Billy Collins for the truth can protect us honesty is the best policy knowing our mistakes could incline us to make better choices. I myself had a personal expericence with lies of our history. I have many different heritages and my most pround heritage is being Native American. At a young age I was taunt the natives where evil people that tormented and hurt all settlers and we had to fight back to help ourselves. Which i didnt learn until late middle school the truth. I resented my heritage over a lie to make America look like a golden boy under layers of filth. But i didnt beging to hate American for the lie. The insident happened then and I am just glad the truth was shared with me. Showing me we are changing for the better and wanna move let the past be past and move forward knowing the mistakes we made. And making better ones off the previous faults making better decisions for ourselves and our country.I cant say ever person will take it the same way i did but we need to trust ourselves and let the truth be key. And i think more than anything people will understand what was done then was done then and change is now and it will only get better knowing where our problems lay.

  6. In “The History Teacher” the teacher doesn’t tell his students about the violent past. By doing this they don’t understand how bullying and hurting other people affect the world so at recess they pick on the other kids. I would say that our generation is “historically ignorant”. Many people now a days just can understand how horrible some things were in our past. Also unfortunately there are some people who just don’t care. They believe it’s in the past so we don’t have to worry about it. What they don’t understand is that just because it happened in the past doesn’t mean it can’t happen again. But we need to learn about the bad moments in our past so we can make sure it doesn’t happen again. For example the holocaust was a terrible moment in history. If anything like that happened again who knows what could happen. So if we learn as much as we can from it we can prevent it happening again in the future. One way I remember the past is pay attention in history. Just by doing something as simple as that you can learn so mush. Another way I do it is by reading books. I don’t like history books. They bore me more than anything. But there are a lot of books that teach you about history but hide it with an incredible story so it’s more entertaining. One other way is to use the internet. You can get the information you want in seconds if you use the internet. For example one day I wanted to learn more about the history of America. So I used the internet and got all the information I could have wanted. And it only took 10 minutes. There are so many ways people can learn about are past. And if we do that we can make for a better future.

In class we read a poem called “The History Teacher” by Billy Collins. In this poem the teacher does not teach the tough truths of our past to children, but instead makes them more child friendly. I agree with this because children should not learn about the horrors of our past. For example, Christopher Columbus as we all know founded America. The children were all taught that and thats it. What really happened is he took it over. There were Indians living in America and he mostly killed all of them and took America over. If children knew about that they would be terrified. So teachers wait until children are more mature and they teach them stuff they have never heard of before. When i first learned about Columbus and how he kill mostly all the Indians I was surprised. I try to understand everything that goes on around us. Some of the things I don’t understand because there are just so many crazy people that do crazy stuff. When we are kids we should not know much of our past because there are just so many horrible things that happened. When we are older we should know most of our past. We should know because we are more mature and older. So in that case we understand more of it. If kids learn about the holocaust and what happened. They would be terrified and now have to grow up that image of mass murdering in their head. But as we grow up we get more mature and we can learn about it and live with it.

  9. In class we read "The History Teacher" by Billy Collins. I do not agree with the situation because if people don't tell us what is really going on then we will just go around thinking everything is alright when it really is not. It is like school. In school all we learn about is how people think our country is great and everything we have done is good . We never really talk about all the bad things we have done. If we dont learn about our mistakes we can never fix them and then there will be people who will think highly of their country. For example in Language Arts we are learning about the Nazi's and the concentration camps in Germany. Its good that we are learning about the past because Germany owned up to their mistakes and realized what they were doing is wrong. Since we are learning about this now we know not to do this because it is horrible and the things people did to the Jews is absolutely disgusting. Another reason to learn about our past is so another crazy person doesn't try and do what Hitler did. Steps I take to familiarize myself with the circumstances of the world around me is to look at the news. The news is very informative and that's my way of whats going on in the world. It prepares me for situations where I wouldn't know what to do and also aware me of the danger that is near. Some issues or ideas I believe all students should be aware of and knowledgeable about is he things in our school that could be dangerous. That way we could know what to stay away from and be cautious. I don't think we should hide things because some people might do what happened in our history. If hiding things goes on to the next generation it will become a cycle and everyone will be ignorant and not know anything then everything will repeat over and over again. Our world will be unlivable.

  10. "The History Teacher" by Billy Collins is a poem about our mislead teachings of history. I personally think that we should know the truth about what happened in our history. it's fine with what their teaching us about other countries but it's a little fishy what they teach us about our own country. We get into extensive detail about tragic events like the holocaust but we don't get into extensive detail about our own personal events which i don't know of because of the point i'm trying to make. Are we really this great country? are we the real terrorist? I just don't know and neither does this current generation and if it keeps up no one will really know. Only our government can tell us about our history. it's their choice not ours.

  11. I believe that this generation would be "historically ignorant" without the resources and teachers to tell all the truth about our history. I also definitely agree with Collins when he suggests that by not teaching our children the tough truths about our past, we would be creating an unaware generation unable to lead in the future. It eminds me of that old movie, The Body Snatchers where everyone is walking around like mindless clones! For example, in the poem, The History Teacher, Collins refers to the ice age as the chill age when people had to wear sweaters all the time. This is not protecting his student's innocence. It is robbing them of their ability to grow intellectually! If we did not know anything about the ice age we would not understand the history of how mankind has evolved over time. We would not understand science correctly and the melting of the polar ice caps or global warming. The extent of our ignorance would be endless, tragic and dangerous. Fortunately, we live in a society where most people do not try to sugar coat our history. For instance, it made me feel sick to my stomach and very sad when we learned about the stories from the Holocoust but i'de rather know what happened to those people in order to understand the ignorance and racism of the Nazis. It is crucially important that we learn from these events to ensure that history doesn't repeat itself. Of course we all aren't expected to be expert historians but we all should know the truth about our pasts no matter how ugly, bloody or disgraceful it is. After all the wars we have learned about since medieval times to the war on terror, it amazes me that people all over the world still engage in physical warfare to resolve problems. Is there not something we could of learned from all our bloodshed throughout time? My main resource that I use to familiarize myself with circumstances of the day is the Internet. However, my best resources on history come from my parents, grandparents a d teachers who have actually lived through things such as The Great Depression, WWII, JFK and 9/11. I think all students today should be knowledgeable about things like wars to truly understand the sacrifices of past generations and to appreciate the freedoms we live with everyday because of those sacrifices. I also think it is important for students to be knowledgeable of the event and history that lead to 9/11 so that we can lead knowledgeably and responsibly in the future when it comes our time to lead. Lastly, we should know about the sciences and the latest scientific techniques being used to try and cure cancer and how to prevent the spread of AIDS and other STD's. to sum my thoughts up, I would say that an ignorant and poorly educated generation is equivalent to a dead one! We can not let that happen, we have to ensure that our generation is ready to "rock" when it comes our turn to lead the world!

  12. As cynics suggested that this was a "historically ignorant" generations, I have to agree with them. In todays day and age, we aren't aware of many things that happened in history that affect our lives every day. Many things in our world have changed from a long time ago to today. By that, meaning traditions and the way are Earth works have changed. Our world is nothing like it was a while ago. That is mostly because humans have impacted all life functions on Earth. Ultimately, that affected us too. A good example of how humans affected Earth is global warming. Global warming is the changes in atmospheric temperature that changes climate which is mostly caused by the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect is caused by humans which raises the temperature on Earth. Having knowledge on how this affects our Earth from past experiences would help us in the future by not polluting Earth and damaging it. As an individual on this planet, I believe that people should knowledge themselves on how to save Earth and what not to do in the future to help protect it. If you are under the age of 18 in school, there's a chance that you can take classes to help knowledge yourself better to save our Earth and take history classes to learn what has happened already. I am 15 years old, and I take a afterschool activity class known as Ocean Club, and I have learned so many things that affect Earth. I've also learned in history class, and biology class many things that happened in the past that affected us, humans. In my writing, I've talked about what affects Earth, and steps to take to save it. There are many things that happened in the past that we can avoid in the future by learning what has been done. I believe that students and people should be knowledged on how to save our Earth, only because we have to live on it for very long time, and I would like generations to live and experience life while it's still good.

  13. "The history teacher" by Billy Collins was one of the important poems we discussed during class. We came up with the solution that Billy Collins thinks that teachers should tell their students the truth about our history. We know that they want to keep their innocence, but we need to tell not just students but everyone about our past history to be aware for the future. We all know that our world moves really fast. It changes just by the minute. People need to keep their awareness and balance of our history. I agree with the sentiment that our generation is "historically ignorant," meaning that we are not aware of our history and culture. I believe that people do not take much interest of knowing our past history and that's why many of the problems and crimes have happened. People are too ignorant to learn or remember our history, and that's why the same problems and crimes are happening over and over again. Because of our ignorance, many people get hurt over the same things. We do not recognize what we are doing. We do not recognize the past problems that were done and we are still doing the same thing.
Me, as an individual, familiarize what goes on in our world and our past history by watching the news, and reading or learning about our history. I think that the issues or ideas all students should be aware of is of the way we are all living. What goes around us. All of us need to know what we are doing wrong and what goes on with others too. We need to learn not to be ignorant. Students, have to recognize their own issues and ideas and the issues and ideas of our world. An example is, the shooting at sandy hook elementary. Things similar to that have happened before and yet we were not aware of it happening again. Many people lose their lives over people that don’t think straight. The people of our world need to see what is going on. If we were aware of the things, than the shooting at sandy hook wouldn't have happened. We would have been aware of this, but we weren’t.

  14. This week we read the poem "The History Teacher" by Billy Collins. He thinks that kids should'nt get taught the rough past. I definitely disagree with this sentiment. The reason why I disagree is because kids these days including me. Even though some of the past is very mean, violent and is terrible to learn about I think kids should learn about it. Another reason why kids these days need to learn about the past is because the bad things that happened we need to know about. We need to learn not to make those mistakes again, or how to stop them. For example, the Holocaust. That's something that happened a long time ago and it is terrible, kids need to learn about this so something like that doesn't happen again! Also I don't think that kids should not learn about other countries cultures either, if they didn't know about world cultures then traveling for them wouldn't be as fun. Also they would have no idea what was going on or what they were doing. For example, my Aunt went to China and she knew so much about their culture. She ended up loving the trip and loving China! I believe that all students should learn about world history. I say this because the more places or countries they go to they could say " Oh I learned that!" and they will have more knowledge on it the certain place. Also they should learn about very famous places like the Eiffel Tower in France or the Sydney Attraction place in Australia. I don't agree with Billy Collins at all because the more knowledge you have the better. I wanna go to many famous attractions around the world like the ones I mentioned and maybe I will go to all of them!

  15. One of the poems we read and discussed was "The History Teacher" by Billy Collins. In this poem, Collins suggests that by not teaching children the tough truths of our past, we risk cultivating a generation of people who will not be aware enough to lead us into the future. I disagree with this act; if I was a teacher I would tell every student the truth and only the truth. Even though it may be a decision that not everyone wants to learn about or experience, its apart of life. He believes that kids shouldn’t be taught about the rough past or present situations. I definitely disagree with this sentiment. Every kid in this generation needs to be taught the truth. For example if a young student is unsure about what is going on in the world around him that is dangerous. Kids need to learn just about everything. The truth is the most important. When the kids become older they will not have any knowledge, and if they believe they have knowledge it’s all false information. An example of a situation every child going to school should be knowledgeable about is school shootings. They need to know how to do the lockdown drill and what to do in a situation about this. If a history teacher lied and told a false lesson about school shootings and later on in that child’s life something like that happens. That child will be lost and not know how to act or handle that situation. The teachers should be teaching the truthful information because we would know how to handle the situation if it was to ever happen again. If children were knowledgeable about it there maybe ways to prevent it from happing again. There is never a good reason to tell a child a lie. No matter what this situation, nobody should be lied to.

When we read the poem “The History Teacher”, it shows a teacher telling his students easier ways to remember our human past. I do not agree that our generation is historically unstable. I disagree with this because we have many archaeologists that discover more to our past every single day. If we were historically unstable, then we wouldn’t have classes in high school like World Studies or American History. The steps I take to familiarize the world around me are that I have to be there for more than two days. I can’t walk into a random place and think it’s familiar to me. I have to get used to the items that are in there, I have to see it before I can familiarize it. I think all Students should be aware of our whole entire history. I say this because it is important to know what our history is and how everything was invented and created. I think that our teachers try and out our past into different words so we can understand it easier, but really they should spend more time with us to try and teach us our history so that if we want to be something that involves our past when we grow up, we actually know what we’re talking about and not something that our history teacher tried to make it easier for us. That’s how I feel about this blog entry.

  17. I Believe it’s not right to tell kids that our past was all nice and nothing but good. If we were to be told that from the day we started learning about history then when we go out into the real world we would think that life is great and there’s no such thing as poverty, crimes murders, when in actuality there is and life Isn’t always fair. To keep myself aware about the world around me I watch the news and read the newspapers with my mom to see what’s going on around our country and around the world. I think students should know about the concentration camps and about World War two, and every other war and event that’s happened in our world to keep people aware, because they say history repeats itself and if anything like that were ever to happen again we would be ready about it and not let it happen again.

  18. It has been suggested by some cynics that ours is a "historically ignorant" generation, meaning that we are unaware of our history and our culture. I do agree with what has been suggested considering that in school we do not learn about current history. As we learn about the past and not so much about current news besides when we do some current events. So I think our generation is “historically ignorant.” As an individual i do not take that many steps in life to familiarize my selfe with the circumstances in the world around me. I do think it is important to know what is going on, but the most that I do is watch the news ever so often that shows me what is going on within the few weeks of the news channel. Though the news is not always up to date with things in the world until it gets important information on what going on in a situation that is big. So I do believe that I could do better to keep myself informed on what is going on in the world around me.Some issues in the world that students should be aware is with problems that are caused in the world that harm us in ways that can destroy a lot of things we need to keep surviving in the world as well as having an education which some kids lack in some areas of the world due to the country’s problems. Some ideas that I have would be to learn more about the world to better it not to ruin it. This could affect the world in a lot of ways like helping keep the world a safe play that people can not turn into a horrible environment for others. This is what I think and how we could do to help us be informed on the world around us as some country’s lack the technology that we have that could help saves and educated millions of lives.

  19. I think that the author of this poem is right about historical ignorance. Some don’t know how history was effected by ignorance and hatred. Hitler was one of the people how was the most ignorant of them all. He ordered thousands maybe millions to death because the thought they were wrong in there religion. It started one of the worst wars in history. The teacher in the poem was wrong to tell his students all those lies about history. Children need to know the severity of the human races history. To prevent anything like that from ever happening ever again. The holocaust was the worst thing to happen in history so far we don’t want another thing like that to happen again in any generations to come. So that is why to history teacher was wrong to tell his students that all those times he was teaching those students were all jokes and laughs. That is why i agree with the author of this poem called the history teacher.

  21. “You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them." Once said by Michael Jordan. This makes me think of the time when I went to Beach Haven West with my Venture Crew to help clean out houses, following Super Storm Sandy. About 12 of us were asked to help clean up the mess of Sandy. So, we were given an address to go to. The house was owned by this elderly couple. They were both about in their 70’s. Their house was a two story home on the water. It had a two car garage and a small porch. Their small backyard had a wooden deck and it was very, very muddy. They wanted us to only take out the furniture that got flooded, but the water went up so high we had to take out the kitchen appliances and the walls, as well. The problem was, she had so many appliances because she used to be a chef. The other woman used to be a pro bowler and all her trophies were destroyed in the garage. The house had a small room with a long couch, which was impossible to get out. So, we had to take the couch apart just to get it out through the doorways. There was also this old antique table. The one lady said it could sit up to 12 people. However, the table was folded up and looked like it could only seat 2 people. I asked her, how could the table seat 12? She unfolded it to show me. In the proses of unfolding the table, it fell apart and she got very upset. I felt bad because I asked her to unfold it. The other lady was a packrat and she wanted to keep everything, but they knew that they couldn’t keep anything. So, when we went to clean out the garage, the one lady wanted to keep everything, while the other woman told us to throw everything out. So, we threw everything out. The hardest part for me was having to get all the instillation out of the walls and into the giant dumpster down the road. It was then when I realized how tired I already was and pushed myself to finish the job to help the elderly couple.

  22. I am writing about the poem the History Teacher by Billy Collins. I disagree with his ways of teaching. He is defiantly ignorant about all of his teachings. No matter how old the students are, or what grade they are in he should be teaching them better. Yes if it is chilly put a sweater on, or a stone can be made into gravel a drive way and so on with his sayings. those things are true but he has been taken them out of context. Why would you want to do that to those students? To me this is kinda misleading. It is like he is making a joke out of our history. Then the students would feel that it is alright to bully the other students. We all know about bullying. What is wrong with this teacher, why is he teaching these young students in the first place?
There are so many ways to familiarize yourself with the issues of today. Computers, good teachers, newspapers, libraries, ipads, even our phones can teach us now a days. So if you feel that you are being misinformed it is really easy to find out the truth. there is really no reason for error but however everyone makes mistakes.
I believe all students should be aware of their own countries history. They should also know world history to see how there country was discovered. i think everyone should know how the world was evolved so we can respect the soldiers who fought in our wars. They are the men and women who gave us freedom for our country. Our country is the youngest and the men who discovered us are our ancestors and it is nice to know their heritage.

  23. I agree with The History Teacher. If we don’t tell our children about the bad times in our past then they will not be able to lead us in the future. The generation after us will probably make the same mistakes as the people from our past did, if we don’t inform them about the bad times. We need them to learn from our past actions. What I do to familiarize myself with the circumstances of the world, is that I listen to adults when they talk about the past and what they have learned from their experiences. I also listen to the news when they talk about the wars going on today and group movements. I learn more about our past from school. For example, I was a little interested to learn about the holocaust, the civil war, and the wars between Great Britain and the United States. However, I would also like to learn more about US history and the effects of what we are doing now. I think we need to spend more time learning about our own country instead of countries like Egypt. I believe that we should be aware of the fact that our past has left us in such a bad situation that we have to stay on the right track to stay balanced. For instance, how our past actions caused our global warming problems. If we don’t fine a new way to support our needs the world will be unlivable. If we use up all of our resources, then there will not be enough left for the next generations. So, that is why we have to inform our new generations about what’s heading their way, so they can prevent and preserve the earth’s resources. Therefore, we should educate our next generation about current and past history so that they can save themselves.
